Recovering Precious Data in San Fernando Valley

Failing hard drive with family photos in North Hollywood home
Failed drive threatening NoHo family memories.

Last month, a North Hollywood family called me in a panic. Their external hard drive, holding years of photos and videos from birthdays and vacations, would not work, and made faint clicking noises—a sign of mechanical failure. At their NoHo home, I acted fast to prevent total data loss. Time was critical to save their memories.

Using specialized tools, I offloaded 95% of their files to a new disk before the drive failed completely. I also set up a NAS device for secure storage, paired with a backup routine using cloud backup and a local external HDD. The family was thrilled, their memories safe at last.

How to Recognize a Failing Drive
Spotting drive failure early can save your data. Look for:

HDD (Mechanical) Symptoms: Clicking, grinding, or whirring noises (head/platter issues); slow file access or freezes (motor problems); files disappearing or corrupting (bad sectors); drive not detected (possible logic board failure).

SSD (and Flash Drive) Symptoms: Slow performance or long load times (NAND degradation); data corruption or missing files (write cycle limits); drive read-only or unresponsive (controller issues). Flash drives may fail from connector wear or sudden unplugging. (TIP: The "Safely Remove Hardware" or "Eject" option ensures that the operating system has finished all pending write operations to the drive and closes any open files or processes associated with it before you physically disconnect it. This minimizes the risk of data corruption or device malfunction).

Stop using the drive immediately and call a pro to maximize recovery chances.

What We Recover (and What We Don’t)
We specialize in logical error recovery—common issues like accidental deletion or formatting (60% of data loss cases). For HDDs, we can replace logic boards on external drives to restore access, but we don’t handle mechanical repairs like broken heads, which require costly clean room recovery ($500–$2,000). For SSDs or flash drives, we address software-based issues, not chip-off recovery (specialized hardware extraction). Catching mechanical issues early, as in the NoHo story, lets us offload data to a new HDD or SSD, saving you money over clean room services. We can also set up a NAS device with cloud and local HDD backups for secure storage.
